The New College is a government-aided, Autonomous, Arts and Science college affiliated to the University of Madras. It was established in 1951 by the Muslim Association of Southern India (MEASI). The college is re-accredited by NAAC with A++ (CGPA 3.61 out of 4) in the fourth cycle. The college envisions to promote educational and economic equity by helping aspiring and underprivileged youth gain access to quality education and to nurture them into successful model citizens of the country. The vision is implemented through a 5E holistic development approach that strives to elevate, educate, empower, engage the students and enable them to excel in life and career. The institution considers Inclusivity, Student Centredness, Excellence and Leadership Development as its core values.
The college offers 27 UG and 15 PG programmes across arts, science and commerce disciplines. Research leading to the award of Ph.D. is offered in 11 departments of the college. Currently, the college has 313 faculty members and over 6100 students are pursuing higher education in the college. The college has established state-of-the art laboratories, ICT enabled classrooms, seminar Halls, multipurpose auditorium, central library, hostel and sports and games facilities.
