About the Department
Department of Economics as dating back to 1954 is one of the inaugural Departments of the College with Mr. Thiruvankatacharya. Department of Economics was established in the Year 1957, with Bachelor of Arts (B.A).
In 1969, Department of Economics headed by Dr. Warriar a renowned scholar in Economics was elevated to Post Graduate Department (P.G) affiliated to the University of Madras.
In 1993, Department of Economics got approved for M.Phil Research Programme under the sequential as well as regular programme....
In 2002, the Syndicate of the University of Madras recognized the Department of Economics, The New College, to conduct Ph.D Programme (Full Time & Part Time).
Department of Business Economics (Shift – II) was started in the year 2019.
There are more than 150 publications credited to the faculty.
As on date, the department has produced FOURTY THREE (43) Ph.D and ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN (116) M.Phil Scholars. Further more than 20 scholars are pursuing Ph.D’s programme.
The Department is at easy to both elite and lower income groups with an aim of imparting higher education facilities.
The Academic programmes are constantly updated and intended to provide the necessary tools to understand the working of the real world in terms of theory and practice.
Department is offering opportunities to Foreign students in a holistic manner.
The Alumni are spread over the world and occupying the prominent positions at various levels.
Besides teaching, the staff members are engaged in research activities, extension activities and so on.
The Department to its credit is having UGC funded projects.
The Department to its credit is having multiple Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading Institutions / Industries.
Staff Members Presented their research papers in International Conference (Bangladesh, Philippines and Indonesia).
