The New College Innovation & Start Up Policy (NCISP)

Preface
    This policy document is prepared in line with the National Innovation and Start-up Policy 2019. This document is expected to serve as a framework for the Innovation and Entrepreneurship activities of The New College, Chennai, in general, and the Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship Cell (IIEC) of the college, in particular.

    The college aims at strengthening all the core activities of the IIEC by following the vision, mission, and guiding principles of this policy document.
Objectives of the Policy
    a)To develop and sustain an innovation ecosystem in the college campus.
    b)To develop entrepreneurial skills among students.
    c)To sensitise faculty members on the need to cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation among the students.
    d)To identify and nurture entrepreneurs and innovators among students and staff.
    e)To facilitate the incubation of innovative and entrepreneurial ideas of students and staff.
    f)To guide the establishment of start-ups and help innovators and entrepreneurs in the college in Intellectual Property (IP) generation and commercialization.

Vision
  To establish a state-of-the-art start-up incubation center and innovation facilities in the campus, and to secure an impressive performance in the Atal Ranking of institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA).

Mission
  To follow a systematic plan to establish and run entrepreneurial development, innovation and knowledge transfer facilities by the way of i) promoting credit courses and project works involving innovation, entrepreneurship and IPR, ii) enhanced industry-academia linkages, iii) infrastructural development for innovation, entrepreneurship, iv) using the services of mentors from outside the institution to guide students and faculty on innovation and entrepreneurship, and v) activities of the Innovation and entrepreneurship club.

Plan of Action from 2021 to 2026
    1.Earmarking an annual budget for innovation and entrepreneurship activities.
    2.Completing all mandatory disclosures and other details in the institution dashboard of the IIC / NISP website.
    3.Participation of I & E Initiatives of MoE, by closely following the notifications and guidelines issued by MoE through the IIC, NISP websites.
    4.Developing an Innovative and Entrepreneurial mindset through a series of activities like awareness programmes, co-curricular events, awards and recognitions.
    5.Encouraging departments to give innovation and entrepreneurship related projects to students.
    6.Arranging for field visits and industry visits for students.
    7.Establishing a central instrumentation facility for the use of researchers and innovators.
    8.Encouraging more departments to offer Academic Programmes related to Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I & E) & IPR.
    9.Taking steps for establishing dedicated infrastructure & facilities to promote Innovation & Entrepreneurship in the campus.
    10.Conducting special programmes for students for the generation of Innovations/ ideas with the support of industry experts and mentors from outside.
    11.Providing basic facilities for the start-ups incubated, and proposed to be incubated by staffand students.
    12.Conducting annual science exhibitions to promote innovation among science students.
    13.Arranging a Commerce Bazaar every year for the promotion of the items manufactured in the college.
    14.Involving Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and other social groups from the neighbourhood in the commercialization of products made in the college, and in other activities related to Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
    15.Encouraging innovators and entrepreneurs to apply for various recognitions and awards.
    16.Establishing a system to mobilise funding for Innovation & Start-ups Incubated in the college.
    17.Developing a dedicated team to help in Intellectual Property (IP) generation and commercialization.
    18.Developing a system to monitor the revenue generated by the innovations and start ups incubated in the college.
    19.Establishing a research park on the college campus.
